Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes will finally travel to Cuba in early October, he announced in a press conference during a ceremony to commemorate the 189th anniversary of the independence of Central America. Funes, who resumed relations with the island in June 2009, will be the first president from his country to visit the socialist system Caribbean island nation.

US Says Gross Detention Stymies Dialogue

The detention in Cuba of U.S. agent Alan Gross is an obstacle to attempt to improve what could be more than a dialogue between countries, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Arturo Valenzuela affirmed. Gross was arrested in December 2009 and remains in prison accused of espionage.

Rappers Join Environmental Cause

The rap duo “Cubanos en la red” will carry out during September several activities to support the conservation of the environment in the Cuban capital, the local press reported. The musicians have called for a concert today in the Havana municipality of Playa dedicated to the protection of the ozone layer, while on Saturday they will work with the Acualina project to clean areas of the capital’s 17 kilometers of coastline.

Ex prisoners ask EU to maintain Common Position

Four of the ex Cuban political prisoners asked the European Union (EU) to maintain the Common Position toward Cuba, a policy established in 1996 and that conditions relations with the island on political reforms. In a rally organized by the right-wing European Popular Party, the four dissidents, who were freed thanks to the mediation of Spain and the Catholic Church, urged keeping the pressure on the government of the Caribbean island nation until all opposition members have been released.
