Laura Chinchilla, 50, the candidate of current President Oscar Arias Liberacion Nacional Party (PLN), won the presidential elections in Costa Rica on the first round on Sunday, reported the Cuban press. When she takes office, Chinchilla will become the Central American country’s first ever female head of state.

Danger of Forest Fires Increases

The risk of forest fires occurring in Cuba will increase starting this month due to the drought of the last quarter of 2009 and the southern winds, announced the National Headquarters of the Forest Rangers Corps. Up to now, in 2010, there have been 20 fires that have affected 211 hectares.
