Water Projects in Hurricane Battered Area

The population of Consolación del Sur and the community of San Diego de los Baños, in the westernmost Cuban province of Pinar del Río, were favored by the inauguration of two pumping stations and a gravity-fed water conduit system, which replaces an old aqueduct, reported IPS. The area was hard hit by two powerful hurricanes, Gustav and Ike, in a ten-day period starting August 31, 2008.

Some 400,000 persons went to the Cuba International Book Fair, whose first stage (Feb.12-22) in the Cuban capital concludes on Sunday, reported IPS. Mexican Senate Asks Obama to End Cuba Blockade

The Mexican Senate asked US President Barack Obama to put an end to that nation’s nearly half century blockade against Cuba. Last week the same Senate requested that the US Supreme Court consider holding a new trial outside Miami for the Cuban Five, imprisoned for over a decade in the US on what numerous legal authorities and human rights groups from around the world consider unsubstantiated charges including conspiracy to commit espionage.
