Is there a US org. with a license to travel to Cuba for the Havana marathon?
Question: I ran the Havana marathon in 2002, before legal travel from the US was further restricted. My friends and I would like to run it again this year, but have not been able to find any organization with a license. Do you know of any?
Answer: One organization that might be able to help you is Global Exchange, an education and action resource centre based in San Francisco. Its mission is to promote human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice around the world.
Global Exchange provides what they call Reality Tours to various countries of the world, including Cuba, with the stated aim of educating the visitor about different cultures. In the past, a small group of North Americans participated in the Havana Marathon with a valid license under the auspices of Global Exchange. We do not know if they still do this, but if not, they might be in the best position to advise you how to go about getting such a license. Below you will find their contact information:
