A few years ago a website appeared that opened the door to commercial exchange for Cubans. From then on, if you wanted to buy anything — from a bathtub to simple headphones or a complete PC — all you only had to do was go to Revolico.com and find what you needed.
Revolico is a site with classified ads full of things for sale for all likes and needs. The only problem is that the government doesn’t like it because the site is operating without its permission.
Many people I know have acquired products through this means that they couldn’t find in the network of state-run stores or were too expensive.
An acquaintance of mine who goes to certain meetings of the Communist Party Central Committee told me that now Revolico is being blocked, although they never explained why. Access to Revolico.com has been blocked for some time, but people know how to create shortcuts (see below) so that others can get in.
Another alternative is to request people in other countries to log on to the site and look through the selections, contact the seller by e-mail and put the would-be buyer here in touch with the seller on the island. It’s undeniable that the web is a quick and successful vehicle, despite the limited access to the Internet in Cuba.
So, if it addresses problems for the public and now the market has been expanded with the issuing of new licenses for self-employment, why is this site being blocked?
As far as I know there haven’t been any ads for the sale of weapons or indecent materials, nor do you find any ideological propaganda. It’s true that the origin of the products is unknown since each vendor is responsible for their merchandise and must answer for it.
Although weight-loss pills are sometimes offered without medical prescription, as are various types of vehicles (whose sale is still forbidden), I don’t believe that the solution is to block the idea or hinder the operation.
If the government wanted, it could develop the project and improve it legally with the appropriate taxes collected through the site. In this way anyone could simply access, search and buy what they need: the formula we all dream of.

DNS alternativos
Esta es una solución un poco más compleja técnicamente, pero con algunas indicaciones se puede configurar. Los DNS (Servidores de Nombres de Dominio en español) son los encargados de traducir los nombres de dominio (ej. www.revolico.com) en direcciones IP (ej. 168.0.0.1) cada computadora conectada a internet tiene una dirección IP, cada vez que tratamos de acceder a una página web u otro servicio, se le “pide” a un DNS que nos diga la dirección IP vinculada al nombre de dominio. Actualmente lo que ocurre en Cuba es que cuando se le “pregunta” a los DNS por la dirección de Revolico te la dan mal, te dan la de Google, es por eso que una solución sería no preguntarle a los DNS de Cuba, que tienen información errónea, se le puede preguntar a otros servidores, como los públicos brindados por Google o los de OpenDNS.

It continues to befuddle me that anyone or any political grouping could buy into the concept that the state should own and control everything. In the US there are websites like craigslist.com and ebay.com where citizens can buy and sell items. Why would a socialist state think that this sort of citizen exchange is inconsistent with socialism?

There are some things of course that the socialist state should own and control 100%, things perhaps like water and electricity. This sort of state or municipal ownership exists and works even under capitalism. Most socialist state ownership however should be silent and partial, with primary ownership by cooperative association.
