Athletes of the Year Elected in Cuba
HAVANA TIMES — The judoka Idalis Ortiz (the only Cuban woman to win a medal at the London Games) and 2012 Olympic wrestling gold medalist Mijain Lopez were elected on Monday as the best athletes in Cuba in 2012, reported the island’s official media.
Volleyball players Wilfredo Leon and Yanelis Santos proved to be the most outstanding individuals in team sports, while the “rookie of the year” designation went to Robeisis Ramirez, the Olympic boxing champion in the 52 kilogram category.
Meanwhile, the world record holder and triple Paralympic champion in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races, Yunidis Castillo, was named best athlete with disabilities on the island.
