Cuba Makes Volleyball Final Four

HAVANA TIMES, Oct. 6 — Cuba’s men’s volleyball team has made it to the final four of the World Volleyball Championships being played in Italy after defeating Bulgaria in a hard fought five-set match on Wednesday (22-25, 25-23, 26-28, 30-28, 15-11).

Wilfredo Leon, 17, led the youthful Cubans with 22 points; captian Robertlandy Simon had 20 and Rolando Cepeda 15 points.  Bulgaria was led by Vladimir Nikolov who had a game high 28 points including six serving aces.

The other three teams to compete in Rome for the top slots are Brazil, Serbia and the host Italians.  According to the tournament website Cuba will face Serbia on Saturday in its semifinal match.

Cuba earned its ticket to the final round winning its third round group over Bulgaria and Spain.

Competing for fifth to eight place in the tournament will be the United States, Russia, Bulgaria and Germany.
