Cuban Track and Field Athletes to Train in Europe
HAVANA TIMES – A total of 12 Cuban athletes will tour Europe this month in training for the World Athletics Championship in Moscow set for August 10-18, reported Prensa Latina.
“The objective is to prepare our athletes for the Championship and reach the minimum standard required by the International Association of Athletics Federations”, in the case of athletes who have not yet achieved it, said federal Jorge Luis Sanchez.
The delegation is led by Olympic silver medalist in the pole vault, Yarisley Silva, followed by Omar Cisneros (400 meter hurdles), Ernesto Reve (triple jump), and Yaime Yarelis Barrios Perez (discus), and Lazaro Borges (pole vault).
The Cubans will participate in events in Germany (on June 7 and 15), Netherlands (June 8), Russia (10th), Norway (13th), France (13th) and Finland (16).
The sports official said that the island wants to take 12 or 13 athletes to the Championships, but made it clear that only those “with a chance to making it to the finals” will be participating.
