Honduras Ruler Thanks Military

HAVANA TIMES, Oct. 3 – The Honduras de facto government and the officers that put it in power celebrated the Day of the Soldier on Saturday with coup leader Micheletti heaping praise on the “courageous” military for perpetrating the coup that forced President Manuel Zelaya out of the country at gun point on June 28.

While the rest of the world -all 192 member countries of the United Nations- deplores the coup for backsliding to the days of the military dictatorships in Latin America, Micheletti praised the military for allowing Honduras “to continue the standards of democracy, peace, justice and the independence of our country.”

Honduras was unanimously suspended from the Organization of American States on July 5th a week after the coup.  The OAS has steadfastly recognized Zelaya as the only legitimate president of the Central American nation.

Zelaya snuck back into Honduras nearly two weeks ago and has been holed up at the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa.  Attempts continue to end the crisis through dialogue.

On several occasions during other attempts at mediation by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, Micheletti said the government is willing to go it alone in the world if necessary, but that Zelaya would not be reinstated to his post.
