No Fatalities Reported in Cuba from Tomas

HAVANA TIMES, Nov. 6 — Cuba’s Civil Defense authorities informed late Friday that no fatal victims nor considerable material damage have been reported so far from the passing of Hurricane Tomas through the Winward Strait close to far eastern Guantanamo province earlier in the day.

Heavy rains fell on several Guantanamo and Holguin municipalities noted the military officers in charge of Civil Defense.

Tomas, now a tropical storm, continues to move in a northeasterly direction as it leaves the eastern Bahamas with winds of 110 kph (70 mph), reported the Cuban Meteorology Institute (INSMET) on Saturday morning.

At 6:00 a.m. Cuba time, Tomas was located 85 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The storm is expected to continue on the same path and gradually lose strength said INSMET.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami still has a tropical storm warning in affect for Haiti where flooding has occurred with the passing of Tomas.  Read the latest from Haiti here.
