HAVANA TIMES – A day of protests in rural communities of the Southern Caribbean and the South Pacific of Nicaragua against the Ortega government supported Interoceanic Canal project ended Thursday without incident, a spokesman for the group said.

Attorney Monica Lopez reported that those who oppose the canal law submitted a brief yesterday to the Supreme Court of Nicaragua over what it calls “delayed justice” in relation to an appeal previously filed by the rural residents.

The farmers demand a repeal of law #840 which created the Interoceanic Canal project, in June 2014.

Planned expropriations of land along the canal route, which would link the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean have been the subject of peasant protests, as well as the damage to the environment to be caused, especially to Lake Nicaragua.
