Paya’s Widow Prohibited from Meeting with Carromero
HAVANA TIMES — Ofelia Acevedo, the widow of deceased dissident Oswaldo Paya Sardinas, will not be allowed to meet with Angel Carromero before his return to Spain, according to a note posted on the website of the opposition Christian Liberation Movement.
During her December 21st meeting with the ambassador of Spain in Havana, the diplomat said Angel Carromero would be handed over to Spanish authorities by the Cuban police, and that no such meeting would take place.
The widow hopes that once in Spain, Carromero will be “willing or able to tell what happened” and that “someday the truth will be known.”
Angel Carromero will serve out the rest of his jail sentence in his native Spain. He was convicted in Cuba of manslaughter in the deaths of dissidents Oswaldo Paya and Harold Cepero, who were killed in the car Carromero was driving when it ran off of the road. Acevedo contends that government authorities were involved in the deaths.
