Provincial Legislatures Reelect Chairs in Cuba

HAVANA TIMES — Cuba’s 15 Provincial Assemblies of People’s Power were formally constituted on Sunday for new five-year terms, almost entirely retaining their former presidents, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.

The 1,269 thousand delegates who were elected earlier this month with no opposition took their positions and selected the presidents of their respective bodies, 14 of whom were re-elected.

According to election officials, the vice presidents of those bodies were also elected yesterday, with only three of them new to those positions.

The top leadership of the island including the president (currently Raul Castro) is expected to be elected on February 24 by members of the recently elected new national legislature.
