Spain to Intercede for Cuban Dissident
HAVANA TIMES, March 5 – Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos will mediate to avoid the death of Cuban opposition member Guillermo Fariñas, who began a hunger strike to demand the release of political prisoners, announced diplomatic sources in Madrid.
Moratinos has upheld the need to sign a bilateral agreement with the island’s government that replaces the common position of 1996, which conditions relations with the European Union to democratic changes in the Caribbean country, reported IPS.
Spain currently holds the rotating chair of the European Union.
