Thousands of Havana Residents without Electricity Do to Fire

HAVANA TIMES — Thousands of people remain without power since a Wednesday night fire and at least two explosions in the underground electrical system in Old Havana, reported the AP news agency.

The incident took place about 9:00 p.m., after a fire broke out in an apartment building. Area residents heard explosions in underground equipment installed to provide power, reads the news note.

“We heard the explosion, and when I went out on the balcony I saw fire and smoke,” Mayra Gonzalez, who lives nearby told AP. “We stayed outside until midnight because we were afraid.”

The official press has not reported the incident, which affected about four square kilometers, though the authorities have reported no injuries or deaths.
