HAVANA TIMES, Nov. 1 — The Cuban women’s volleyball team won their first match after two losses at the World Championships by edging Kazakhstan three sets to two (25-20 15-25 25-27 25-23 10-15) on Sunday.
Cuba was led by Kenia Carcacés with 25 points, Yohana Palacios 23 and Rachel Sánchez 20. Kazakhstan was led by Lyudmila Avarbayeva with 17 points and Olga Nassedkina and Olga Drobyshevskaya with 16.
The “Morenas del Caribe”, as they are known in Cuba, now play a crucial match against Thailand on Tuesday. A win would keep them in the running to qualify for the second round; a loss would lower their chances considerably with a final match against the USA on Wednesday.
After Sunday’s matches, the USA leads group C with a 3-0 record, followed by Thailand and Germany 2-1, Cuba and Croatia 1-2 and Kazakhstan 0-3. The top four teams will advance to the next round.
