Cuba-Spain Relations ‘Much More Fluid’
HAVANA TIMES — The Secretary of State for the European Union, Iñigo Mendez de Vigo, said in an interview with Europa Press that the Spanish government’s relations with Cuba are much more fluid.
“We’re talking much, much more with the Cuban authorities than before, and I think in a good direction,” said Mendez, who was in favor of “helping them,” referring to the Cuban people.
On Spain’s position in relation to the EU’s “Common Position” on Cuba, Mendez de Vigo said it will be necessary to wait to see how events unfold on the island and “appreciate the good will that exists” in that country “to change things.”
The Secretary of State added that Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo is directly participating in the negotiations around the “Carromero case” (involving a Spanish citizen charged with involuntary manslaughter in the wake of a traffic accident in which two Cuban dissidents died) and has good communication with his Caribbean counterpart.
