Cuba: Intense Rain and Flooding in Havana

Havana Friday Nov. 29

HAVANA TIMES — An almost stationary cold front over the north coast and western Cuba brought intense rains to Havana on Thursday and Friday as well as early Saturday. At 9:00 a.m. local time, flooding is present in numerous locations in the capital, especially in low lying areas.

The Cuban weather service notes that unstable conditions continue and that considerable cloud cover and precipitation could continue on Saturday.  Sunday is expected to mark a change with  sunny weather.

  • I know a family that lives in Habana Vieja near the corner of Teniente Rey and Cuba streets. During heavy rains, the sewer backs up into their apartment. They have asked the government to repair this problem, even speaking directly to Eusebio Leal, the City Historian, and nothing has changed. I can only imagine what they must be going through given this recent storm.

  • Oh, that is terrible! I read that a building damaged by these rains has collapsed in Centro Havana, killing two people.

My heartfelt sympathies are with the long suffering people of Cuba. What a shame the government just spent millions on a pointless military exercise, money they could have used to repair the decayed and neglected drainage system of the capital.
