Cuba Gets a Gold at World Jr. Athletics Championships
HAVANA TIMES — The Cuban delegation to the World Youth Athletic Championships, culminating in the U.S. city of Eugene, Oregon, won a gold medal, which went to triple jumper Lazaro Martínez, reported Prensa Latina.
The young man of only 16 years managed a jump of 17.13 meters, a record for the tournament, and allowing Cuba to reach ninth place in the medals (one gold and four silver), the best position in Latin America and the Caribbean in the global fight for persons under 20 years.
Cuba finished in the same position (ninth) in the overall points tally, which with the medals also included a pair of fourth places, a trio of sixth and seventh places.
