HAVANA TIMES — Art has taken over the Cuban capital for the next month with the opening on Friday of the 12th Havana Biennial. Expositions, street art, performances and much more can be seen at numerous locations through June 22. HT was at some of the inaugurations.

In her performance “Dream Javier”, Afghan artist Jeannno Gaussi expresses the reality of individuals and their dreams of traveling to France, the fantasy of climbing the Eiffel Tower. She ingeniously reflects these desires in her rickshaw.

Tirzo Matha and David Bade combine painting with fruits and vegetables and take their commercial and artistic merchandise through the streets of the city.

Architectural projects are present like that of Sandra Calvo, of Mexico, with her work “The multiplicity of the interior landscape.”

Ideas using recycled elements expressed in the work of the Senegalese artist Momar Seck’s, “Connection and reconnection” installation presents a suitcase of different colors on a runway, which refers to the global communication through the airspace.

“Topography of resistance” through digital photography on aluminum traces the history of people forgotten by others. This work by Mexican Alinka Echeverria gathers fingerprints of those who fought against the apartheid system in South Africa.

Ignored parts of the capital are now home to the anticipated event. The sleepy town of Casablanca, across the bay from Old Havana, participates this year for the first time in this major art event, with its people conspiring with the artists.

Austrian Johann Lurf participates with his work “Capital Cuba”, an audiovisual show that features the two shores of Havana harbor and the traditional boat trip to and from Casablanca.

The Japanese participation includes Han Sungpil through a giant hanging on the building of Editora Abril, it reflects the architecture of his country.

The opening day was intense, beginning early and concluding into the night. It will be followed by sequence of openings… as new exhibitions will have us tour the city in the coming days. The Biennial is with us until June 22 at dozens of enclosed and open-air locales throughout the city.

  • What is shown in the forefront of the picture? Why an upside down Coca Cola advertisement. Art has arrived in Havana!
