Nicaragua: Civic Alliance Announces New Protests
HAVANA TIMES – The Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy announced on Monday in a Managua press conference two new protest activities to keep up the pressure on the Ortega-Murillo government, reported 100% Noticias.
The first, a two-hour street demonstration, will take place on Wednesday from 11 AM to 1 PM between two busy roundabouts in the capital. The population living or working on the Masaya Highway are invited to show their support on the sidewalks of their homes and offices.
The second protest scheduled is a march in Managua on Saturday, July 7, at 10 AM, as well as similar marches in cities throughout the country. “We will highlight the importance of having control of the streets and holding peaceful protests,” said Juan Sebastián Chamorro, a representative of the business sector on the Civic Alliance.
“Saturday’s march is being called ‘Together we are a volcano’, to demonstrate the strength and unity of the people to demand that Ortega leave, to proclaim that the streets belong to the people, as well as seeking justice for the political prisoners and those killed in the struggle” said Lesther Aleman also on the Alliance representing the University Student Coalition.
For Lesther it is important that the people take to the streets because, “it is the type of protest that Ortega is most fearful of and what encourages us to continue on, as it shows the bravery of the people. The streets are the space that for 11 years in this country had been off-bounds and today they are ours.”
