Mexico’s AMLO Rejects Border Wall as US Plans New Deportation Flights to Venezuela

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador

By Democracy Now

HAVANA TIMES – Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Attorney General Merrick Garland were in Mexico City Thursday meeting with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who condemned the border wall.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador: “This authorization for the construction of the wall is a step backward. It doesn’t solve the problem. It doesn’t solve the problem. We have to address the causes.”

Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas announced the U.S. will resume deportation flights directly to Venezuela, threatening Venezuelan asylum seekers with harsher consequences if they cross the U.S.-Mexico border. For years the U.S. government did not regularly deport Venezuelans because of tensions between Washington and Caracas. Thousands continue to flee Venezuela due to an economic catastrophe that’s been largely worsened by U.S. sanctions.

  • We are putting migrants in prison work camps to clean up after the fires in some places. They live in military tents and are getting very good food and medical care. It is much better than living in a detention center or living on the street like many people do. The work camps have very few illegal drugs and no alcohol. They supplies including smokes a $2 / hr spending money it is a better quality of life than many of the working class have in ont now .

  • I agree with the earlier comments that AMLO is quick to criticize and complain but never offers REAL solutions. An example of this is when he suggested that the US should put undocumented immigrants to work planting trees. Think about it…what quality of life would an immigrant acquire planting birch trees in New Hampshire?

  • Well the question for the president of Mexico would be. If USA can’t build a wall in its border. Why Mexico build a wall in its southern boxer with Guatemala? Ok r my ay e this. When Mexico going to stop the deportation of the Mexican children born from undocumented o pop stents from Guatemala?

  • AMLO is a political Fox. He knows what he wants, but none of the answers. So others are always to blame. He regards the Dictators of Venezuela and Cuba as friends, but seeks the advantages of a trade agreement with Canada and the US. As my wise Grandmother said: “You cannot have your cake and eat it.”

  • If the president of Mexico does not agree with the United States building a wall to prevent illegal immigration, can he give a solution to the problem? Why is he opposed? In my opinion he is opposed because his country’s people are the worse offenders, otherwise he should give a better answer, he is not offering any alternative to the problem.
