Israeli Attacks Kill 200 Palestinians in 24 Hours as Rains Increase Spread of Disease in Gaza

By Democracy Now

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed 200 Palestinians in the past 24 hours. Among the dead are at least 20 people killed in overnight air raids on Rafah near the southern border with Egypt, where nearly half of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million is sheltering from Israel’s unrelenting bombardment. Their misery was compounded Wednesday as the area was hit with heavy rains and cold winds. These are Palestinians forced to live in a tent city in al-Mawasi in southern Gaza, which Israel has designated as a so-called safe zone.

Jassir Barbach: “Children sleep in the tent, while some adults have no choice but to sleep on the streets. There is no food, no water. The children lack milk and diapers. The situation is dire, with no sanitary conditions or toilets.”

Mahmoud Ashour: “I have four children with gastrointestinal diseases and flu. My youngest son has a cold, but we don’t have any medicine. I have never felt as helpless and miserable in my life as I do now.”

The United Nations warns Gaza faces a “public health disaster.” Lynn Hastings is the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Lynn Hastings: “We’ve got a textbook formula for epidemics and a public health disaster. This is in part, of course, because the shelters have long ago exceeded their full capacity, with people lining up for hours just to get to a toilet, one toilet available for hundreds of people. You can imagine what the sanitation conditions are like as a result.”

The WHO says there have been 360,000 cases of infectious diseases recorded in Gaza’s shelters. That includes meningitis, jaundice, chickenpox, lice, scabies, upper respiratory tract infections, and diarrhea, which is a leading cause of death for young children. The World Food Programme says 83% of households in southern Gaza are going hungry; in the north, that figure is 97%.

  • Anti, yes, if there were a few million Hamas, it would be Israel’s best interest to drive them into the sea. But there not a few million people living in Gaza, and 95 percent of those that do are sympathetic to Hamas. Unfortuneatly many have been been indoctirinated since birth, that Israel is the little satan and the USA is the great satan, and that death is better than life. Kind of like the Cuban childeren are indoctrinated to strive to be like Che, and sing songs about uncle Fidel. Well I have lived in Cuba. The Cuban government is like Don Quiote fighting an imaginary enemy, tilting against windmills. and blaming the cuban people’s hunger and lack of medicine on the imaginary blockade.
The cuban people are under siege, not from a foreign enemy, but by the dictatorship. Thank God for the internet, the people of Cuba are waking up.
Everytime that I pass by the statue of Don Quiote on Calle 23 I chuckle, I see Fidel and Che.

  • John and Sooke, You seem to be of the narrative that killing a few million Palestinians might be the best thing for Israel’s government. You have probably never lived in an occupied country or territory under siege and blockade. If you have, you know it doesn’t create good feelings towards the oppressors. Urban guerrilla forces don’t wear uniforms so their enemy can easily find them. You must be aware their enemy has 95% more fire power, intelligence capabilities, planes, bombers, helicopters, etc. And the main point is two wrongs don’t make a right. Neither the Hamas slaughter of mostly civilians and some soldiers October 7th nor the last months of Israeli massacre of mostly civilians and some Hamas fighters has any justification that I can see. Especially if you don’t want never ending war.

  • Sooke is absolutly correct.
Why don’t they wear uniforms? Why do they attack civilian music festavals and small villages instead of millitary bases? Why are Hamas leader hiding in Qatar, Seria, and Iran? Why have they spent the billions of relief and aid money sent over the years in the interest of their people, instead building tunnels to hide there soldiers? Why do they place missles and millitaty opperations in schools and hostpials.
BECAUSE THEY ARE COWARDS, HIDING BEHIND THE INNOCENTS LIKE A LITTLE GIRL HIDES BEHIND HER MOTHERS DRESS!
Democracy Now will never ask these questions, it doesn’t fit their narrative.

  • I would suggest the ” Palestinian Ministry of Health” request that Hamas where uniforms like the IDF. It makes identifying the enemy so much easier. Of course, using Gazan civilians as a human shields is an age-old Hamas tactic. Then they blame the IDF for the fatalities.
