Cuba Not on Hurricane Igor’s Path
By Circles Robinson
HAVANA TIMES, Sept. 12 — Igor is the name of the latest Atlantic region hurricane this season and while it is still a long ways from the Caribbean, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami map its course as headed far to the north of Cuba and Florida.
The NHC sees Igor becoming a major hurricane by Tuesday as it makes its way west through the Atlantic.
Cuban weather experts are also keeping close tabs on Igor’s path, having issued their 7th advisory notice on Saturday evening. A new one is due Sunday at 6:00 p.m. EST. No mention has been made so far of any potential threat to the island.
The NHC notes Sunday morning that Igor —a category one on the Saffir Simpson scale— currently packs maximum sustained winds of 130 kms. (80 mph) and has a minimum centra pressure of 988 millibars.
The hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 for the Caribbean region.
So how’s the drought situation on the island then? Tropical storms have their place in the scheme of things.
