Eduardo Sosa at the Casa del ALBA

HAVANA TIMES, July 15 — Perhaps by chance but maybe out of conviction, one day Eduardo Sosa decided to become a trova musician. If it was by chance, he had good aim. If this was something he resolved to put all his energy behind, then he succeeded at that too.
His voice allows him to sing any style of music, so for him his principal task is how to continue being faithful to Cuban trova music. He is pursuing it and it’s taking him where he wants to go.
Without formal musical training, he has come to Havana from Santiago de Cuba with his talent serving as his letter of introduction. Now, every last Friday of the month, he offers his gift to us at the ALBA Cultural House (556 Linea Avenue, at the corner of D Street, in Vedado), at 8:00 in the evening. It’s a relaxed environment where the public is attuned to trova.
Eduardo, a simple man from the provinces, began his last concert by congratulating a “very intelligent kid” who had graduated from the sixth grade. He then gave us “Una Canción a Irene,” a song about a woman from Jarahueca that swears she once flew ¬- which he believes – and who says “there’s not enough room in her chest for love.”
He also dedicated “A Son for Contramaestre”, and his guest artist for the evening Juan Carlos Perez, who was “a friend from the early years when I didn’t have anywhere to live.” Also recognized was the group Conexo and Manuel Argudin.
Sosa sang “En el tronco de un arbol,” one of two songs from Venezuelan folklore; and “Verde-Azul,” a song that has become an icon for those fighting for Puerto Rican independence.
He was accompanied by a small group and the performance lasted long enough for him to interact with the audience there to hear him. Many know him for his previous work in the duet Postrova, and now they can follow him in his career as a soloist.
It’s a good place to spend some time with friends. The admission is free and the street is on a central transportation line.
