Cuban-born Gymnast Makes the US Olympic Team
HAVANA TIMES — The Cuban-born gymnast Danell Leyva won a spot on the US Olympic team after beating out his Puerto Rican teammate John Orozco on Saturday in qualifying rounds for the London 2012 Olympic Games, reported AP.
Almost 20 years ago Leyva and his family arrived in the US from Cuba, where his mother and stepfather had been gymnasts.
“It’s great, because I wanted him to go to the Olympics and to represent me and all Cuban immigrants who came to this country for a better life and to improve themselves,” said his stepfather and coach, Yin Alvarez
According to the new article, Leyva has become one of the finest gymnasts in the world, combining complicated skills with impressive elegance and style.
