Gibara Film Festival Kicks Off

HAVANA TIMES, April 13 – The 7th Humberto Solas Non-Budget Film Festival opens Monday in the small coastal city of Gibara, Holguin, 690 kilometers east of the Cuban capital, with the participation of 112 films from 20 countries, the organizers announced.

The event, which runs through April 19, will also host debates on filmmaking and post-production, as well as the fantastic genre and special effects in low-budget cinema, reported IPS.

Gibara was hard hit by Hurricane Ike on September 7, 2008 and has been working overtime to rebuild homes and public buidlings ever since, including the damaged cultural facilities.

At first people wondered if it would be possible to host the festival this year. Doing so today is considered a big accomplishment that involved many hands.
