Monument to Boxer Teofilo Stevenson

HAVANA TIMES — Cuban authorities will dedicate a monument and a plaza to honor boxing legend Teofilo Stevenson (1952-2012) in his home province of Las Tunas, EFE reported.

The public works project, in tribute to the three time Olympic and world champion, is designed to celebrate sports and cultural events, said the president of the Provincial Assembly of Las Tunas, Lilian Rodriguez.

Meanwhile Alcides Sagarra, Stevenson’s head coach, revealed that starting next year, the Teofilo Stevenson Boxing Competition will take place in Las Tunas, where priority will be given to the heavyweight category.

The famous Cuban boxer died last June of a heart attack, leaving a track record of 301 victories in 321 bouts over 20 a year period. Of his few losses, two of them were against Russia’s Igor Visotski.
