Electricity Restored in Guantanamo, Cuba

HAVANA TIMES — The restoration of electrical service in the eastern Cuban province of Guantanamo, one of area of the island the hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy, is at 99 percent functioning capacity , reported the Prensa Latina news agency.

The hurricane caused over a thousand shortages, some 160 fallen or leaning poles, 13 transformers damaged and over 18 miles of lines affected.

Isolated households in a few municipalities are still without electricity in the province and in several locations in the town of Baracoa.

Repairs to Santiago de Cuba, however, are proceeding at a slower pace given the extent of the damage, while in Holguin recovery is at 80 percent. However authorities there alerted the press that “it’s a challenge to move forward.”
