Parliamentarians Alerted about Racism in Cuba
HAVANA TIMES — The issue of racism on the island was approached critically during the National Assembly’s Commission on Education, Culture, Science and Technology – a session that was held on Wednesday at the Havana Convention Center.
The meeting called on parliament to deepen its analysis of this problem and for the media to help tackle the issue, but without turning it into a full-blown “campaign,” reported the Granma newspaper.
In this same vein, former Minister of Culture Abel Prieto, who is currently a cultural affairs adviser to the Cuban president, said the first step is to “become aware of manifestations of racial inequality and discrimination in the country, which are the aftermath of colonialism, neo-colonialism, and other causes.”
On Thursday the assembly conducted its second and last regular 2012 plenum session, which will also be the last of the current term.
