Cuban VP Instructs New Young Legislators

HAVANA TIMES — The Second Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party, Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, met on Thursday in Havana with the youngest newly elected deputies to the National Assembly of People’s Power, reported the Granma newspaper.

On behalf of the party leadership, Machado Ventura, 82, explained to the new legislators that their task cannot be limited to the brief bi-annual sessions of the National Assembly, saying “we’re going to attempt to elevate the content of parliament’s tasks, and these tasks will be up to you.”

The perspectives of the first vice president of the Councils of State and Ministers were shared during a meeting of the National Bureau of the Young Communist League with the young deputies.

Article 5 of the Cuban Constitution grants full power to the island’s party to influence and decide on governance structures.
