Jesse Jackson Visits Cuba, May See Alan Gross
HAVANA TIMES – Jesse Jackson, civil rights activist and politician, arrived on Friday to Cuba as a guest of the Catholic Church.
According to Reuters, Jackson’s mission is to facilitate an improvement in relations between the United States and Cuba and also see agent Alan Gross, a fellow US citizen imprisoned in Havana since 2009, convicted of endangering Cuban national security.
Jackson is no stranger in Havana having visited several times and meeting with Fidel Castro and other leaders of the Cuban Revolution.
Another possible interest of Jackson in Cuba would be meeting with leaders of Colombia’s FARC guerrillas, installed in Havana for peace talks with the Colombian government.
Jackson, Reuters noted, was in Colombia last month where he asked the FARC to release former US soldier Kevin Scott Sutay, kidnapped in June.
Why did Jackson only meet with the leaders of Cuba’s overwhelmingly white dictatorship?
Why didn’t he meet with the Afro-Cuban leaders of the island’s courageous democracy movement?
Why didn’t he meet with the leader of The Ladies in White, Berta Soler, or with Angel Moya, Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet, Manuel Cuesta Morua, Ivan Garcia, Guillermo Farinas, Damaris Moya Portieles or Ivan Hernandez Carrillo?
Why didn’t he advocate for the release of Afro-Cuban political prisoners, such as Sonia Garro, Ramon Munoz and Ivan Fernandez Depestre?
Jackson’s concern about civil rights for black people seemed conspicuously absent while in Cuba.
