Rains Benefit Reservoirs in Cuba

The rains associated to tropical depression sixteen mitigated the difficult situation of the reservoirs in the centre and east of Cuba, depressed because of the acute drought, sources from the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources reported. Just the Zaza Dam, the country’s largest, incorporated around 133 million cubic metres, an amount that will increase in the next few hours with the water flowing in from the rivers that feed it.

Concern about alcohol consumption among youth

Sixty-six per cent of the adolescents who answered a survey carried out in the schools of the municipality of San José de las Lajas, in the province of Havana, had consumed alcoholic beverages, a figure considered worrisome because it reveals the early beginning of “a possible addiction that unquestionably has an influence on and damages biological, psychological and social development.” The research, published by Havana’s Revista de Ciencias Médicas medical journal, also warned about the proportion of girls and female adolescents, “given that it is recognized in literature as the least tolerant and at greatest risk” for this population group

More Tourists, but Main Markets Fall

Mural in tourist installation HAVANA, Sept. 29 – The number of tourist arrivals to Cuba up to last August increased 1.8 per cent as compared to a similar period in 2009, but the principal tourist markets, headed by Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and Germany, reported a tendency to decrease, balanced out by the increase of other non-traditional markets such as Russia, according to a report by the National Office of Statistics.

Cuba has made efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) related to children and adolescents, despite limited resources, José Juan Ortiz, UNICEF representative in the island, highlighted. “The idea is political will more than technological development or monetary power; of awareness that the Millennium Development Goals are in our hands, from and by the new generations,” the official said.
