New Venezuelan Election Campaign Begins

The campaign for the December 8th local elections in Venezuela kicked off on Saturday with caravans and a festive atmosphere. The government called on citizens to participate in the vote, while the opposition called for converting the elections into a plebiscite on the performance of President Nicolas Maduro.

Interview with Calle 13’s El Residente

Calle 13, one of Latin America’s most popular bands, released a new song this week featuring an unlikely collaborator — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The song, “Multi_Viral,” also features Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and the Palestinian singer Kamilya Jubran. To create the lyrics, Calle 13 lead singer and songwriter René Pérez asked followers on Twitter to express their social justice concerns in a live brainstorming session with Assange. This is not the first time Calle 13 has made headlines for its political work.

Obama Makes Tepid Call for Change in US Policy on Cuba

Without mentioning any specifics US President Barack Obama called Friday for a revision of US policies towards Cuba. In an address to a fundraiser in Miami Obama said, “We have to be creative and we have to be thoughtful and we have to continue to update our policies.”
