Castro Urges Youth to Wage “Economic Battle”

Cuban President Raúl Castro urged the members of the Young Communist League (UJC) to work in the “economic battle”, because “the sustainability and preservation of our social system depends” on it. When closing the 9th Congress of that organization, Castro mentioned problems such as insufficient agricultural production, corruption, inflated payrolls and lack of labor force as some of the challenges facing the country.

Strong Drought in Guantanamo, Cuba

The acute drought in the eastern province of Guantánamo could endanger agriculture in that region, the farthest away from the Cuban capital, reported IPS. In the first quarter of this year only 40 percent of the historic average rainfall has fallen for that period.

Discussions on Energy and Environment

Some 100 specialists from several countries will debate issues such as the relationship between renewable energy sources and food security and water supply during the 9th Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development International Workshop that will be held starting Tuesday in the eastern province of Granma, announced Amado Calzadilla of the Organizing Committee. The event is sponsored by the Cuban Society for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources and Respect for the Environment (CUBASOLAR).
