Baracoa, Cuba 6-Months after Ike

Baracoa, Guantanamo, a lovely coastal town in northeastern Cuba, was seriously affected in 2008 by two weather events. First a surprise sea surge in March hit and then the furry of Hurricane Ike in September. A total of 6,157 homes in the municipality were damaged in one way or another, of which 3,459 have been repaired. Havana Times takes a look at the reconstruction work.

Of the homes with partial structural damage 64.2 percent have been repaired, and 14.2 percent of the totally destroyed homes have been rebuilt.

Roberto Carcasses Presents New CD

Roberto Carcasses’ dreamy new jazz CD, “Matizar” was presented on March 15 at the Casa de las Americas Cultural Institution in Havana. Robertico was accompanied on the special evening by the band Interactivo including Yusa, Yandy Martinez, Raul Verdecia, Francis del Rio, Adel González and Descemer Bueno, co-author of one of the songs on the CD. While things didn’t turn out as most Cubans wanted, the island’s team in World Baseball Classic II managed a 4-2 record before being eliminated from the tournament, just shy of the semifinals. Frederich Cepeda was Cuba’s top hitter, seconded by Yoennis Cespedes.

Skizoo at the Maxim Rock

Red walls, lots of smoke, colored lights, youth wearing black army boots and wanting to release a little energy. That was the setting awaiting the Spanish rock group Skizoo at the packed Maxim Rock Club in Havana. They also played at the Pinar del Rio Rock Festival.

Their CDs have won them both critical and public recognition, with their performances loaded with positive messages.

Not many bands come to our island with the aim of sharing their music with Cubans, but for many it’s the best way to assess the quality of artists – listening to them live.
