Run Off Local Elections Held

Cuba held runoff local elections on Sunday in 2,121 voting districts where no candidate received the absolute majority of over 50% in voting the previous week. Ruben Perez, vice president of the National Electoral Council told the press that in five provinces the turnout was over 91% an hour before the polls closed. Final tallies are expected on Monday afternoon.

May Day Parade in Havana, Cuba

International Workers Day will once again be celebrated with the traditional parade through Havana’s Plaza of the Revolution. According to Cuban authorities on Friday over 1,300 labor leaders from 56 countries are on hand as well as representatives of 18 Cuba brigades and solidarity groups.

Seeing as that the author of the article seems to be interested in the US electoral system, please note that normally only 50-60% of the possible electorate votes there, and once the votes are divided between the Republicans and Democrats, the president of the US (which IS NOT elected directly elected but rather by electoral colleges – remember Bush vs. Gore, etc,) gets about say 20% of the votes: a very far cry from the minimum 50% required for any Cuban elected citizen. And so Cubans, through the 2007-08 elections of the municipal assembly delegates and the National Assembly deputies do indeed have a say as to who should be the president.
