Alejo Carpentier’s First Novel to be Republished
HAVANA TIMES – The novel “Ecué-Yamba-O!” by the great Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier, will have a new edition, 35 years after its only publishing on the island, reported the Juventud Rebelde newspaper. site.
The edition will offer the original text that published in 1933 (Spain), with the return of the illustrations that accompanied it, and all the variants found in the archives of the Alejo Carpentier Foundation, almost all unpublished.
Carpentier was a severe critic of his debut novel. He never wanted to see a second publishing and only agreed to a one-time printing in Cuba in 1977.
“Ecué-Yamba-O” is considered one of the Cuban novels of the first half of the twentieth century, whose hybrid character came to break with many cultural and stylistic patterns of Spanish-American literature.
