Cuba’s Big-time Drug Seizures in 2009

HAVANA TIMES, Oct. 9 – Cuban authorities said Friday that they have captured nearly 2.2 million kilos of drugs in the first half of 2009, reported IPS.  The major part of that amount was the result of operations by the Border Patrol Troops in the north eastern region of the Caribbean country.

Cuba would like to see greater cooperation with the United States on drug trafficking prevention, a possibility if relations between the two countries improve.   To date meetings have been held on the topics of migration and direct postal service with no accords announced.

The US is the main market for drugs being shipped north from South America.
