Cuba Has Record Low Infant Mortality
HAVANA TIMES, Jan. 3 – Cuba closed 2010 with an infant mortality rate of 4.5 per 1,000 live births, the lowest in its history, the island’s state-run press reported. Last year also concluded with a birth rate decrease, since there were 2,326 less births than in 2009, which confirms the tendency toward a population reduction in the Caribbean island nation, reported IPS.
This is one wonderful, objective indicator of a fact of life in Cuba — but it is only one. Unfortunately, too much is made of it — obviously to compensate, politically, for other indicators which are NOT so good… But in any case: don’t stop producing healthy children!; and so a dismantling of any sector of the public health-care system in Cuba — de facto or otherwise justified — will be proof of counter-revolutionary intentions on the part of at least a faction in the state bureaucracy and/or the ‘Party’. ‘No Pasaran’, when it comes to socialized health-care. Bottom line.
