Cuba Nickel Plant Reopens in the Wake of Hurricane Sandy

HAVANA TIMES — One of the nickel plants is now operational in the town of Moa, Holguin, after having suffered damage from Hurricane Sandy last month, reported Reuters.

“After 10 days of intensive work by repair crews at the Ernesto Che Guevara plant in Moa, that plant is now operating and producing nickel,” a state television channel explained.

The plant annually produces around 30,000 tons of nickel plus cobalt per year, while the National Center for Mineral Resources reports that more than 30 percent of the world’s nickel reserves is concentrated in Holguin.
