Cuba to Play in Caribbean Baseball Tournament

HAVANA TIMES — Cuba will send a team to participate in the Caribbean Baseball Series to take place February 2-7, 2014 on Margarita Island, Venezuela, commissioner Higinio Velez told the press in Havana.

The participation of the Cubans as tournament guests had required special permission from the US government and the approval from Major League Baseball, granted on a one-time only basis.  The Cubans have been absent from the tournament since 1960.

Last season’s Cuban league champions, Villa Clara, will represent the island at the tournament, noted Velez.

The other countries participating in the Caribbean Series are Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico and the host Venezuela.
