Cuban Children’s Writer Receives Award

HAVANA TIMES, Dec. 6 — Cuban writer Nercys Felipe said from her home in western Pinar del Rio Province that she felt moved by the news of her winning the 2011 National Literature Prize, an award that she learned about yesterday.

Felipe, who won after several rounds of voting over 18 works, is a founder of Guiñol Theatre Group, a professor at the Pinar del Rio Art School, and a two-time winner of the Casa de las Americas Literary Award.

The writer told reporters that the award, which will be conferred at the next Havana International Book Fair (Feb. 2012), is recognition of Cuban literature designed for children and young audiences, the public to which all of his work is devoted.
