Cuban Teacher Fired for Being a Lesbian

HAVANA TIMES — A Cuban elementary school principal, Nora Carmen Velazquez, 36, was dismissed from her post due to the rumor that she is a lesbian and in a relationship with another teacher, reported the Spanish Anodis.com website.

The rumor that the principal of the Lazarus Villavicencio Elementary School met in her office with another teacher “for hours” was enough for education officials of the Corralillo Municipality in the central province of Villa Clara to make their decision.

The recent nomination of gender-rights advocate Mariela Castro (the daughter of the current Cuban president) for a position in the nation’s Parliament could mean an improvement in conditions for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people on the island.
