EU Parliament Speaker Down on Cuba
HAVANA TIMES, Dec. 6 – European Parliament Speaker Jerzy Buzek (Czech Republic) said that the European Union would be willing to apply flexibility to its Cuba policy as long as the island fulfils the standards of respect for human rights established by that bloc, which, in his opinion, are violated in the Caribbean nation, reported IPS .
The Czech Republic has been one of the most outspoken critics of the Cuban government. However, in January 2010, Spain takes over the helm of the 27 nation EU for a sixth month term and the possibility of improved ties with Cuba are expected to get a higher profile during that period.
Many people in the UK wanted a referendum on the EU and were sadly let down by the Czech Republic who could have allowed us to demand a referendum (denied by our PM, Gordon Brown).
Hopefully when Spain takes over the helm, there should be more rational, reasonable and understanding.
