EU to Start Negotiations with Cuba by Year’s End

HAVANA TIMES – The European Union (EU) believes it’s a good time to talk to the Cuban government, and to begin negotiations by the end of this year, announced Christiam Leffter, the EU Americas Department executive director.

According to Prensa Latina, the European representative is visiting the island in order to “promote the talks for an agreement that would provide a platform on which to build greater exchanges”.

Cuba is the only country in Latin America and the Caribbean with which the EU does not have an agreement in the absence of a legal framework for it, and “this is an exception that should not continue,” said Lefftler at a news conference on Thursday.  He also noted that there are “elements of divergence”.
