Flotilla Fireworks Near Cuban Coast

HAVANA TIMES, Dec 12 — A fleet of five vessels with 60 Cuban exiles aboard, sailed from Key West on Friday into international waters to launch fireworks 14 miles off the Cuban coast.

Shortly after 7:00 pm, despite a steady rain, the flares could be seen from the Malecon seawall and other points in the Vedado neighborhood. The boats, led by the activist Ramon Saul Sanchez, returned to Miami early Saturday morning.

The action, which took place on the eve of International Human Rights Day in support of the Cuba’s internal dissident movement, was not the first such action carried out by groups from Miami. On this occasion, though, it was marked by preventive arrests of some opposition members on the island.
