‘Ladies in White’ to Attend Papal Mass in Havana
HAVANA TIMES, March 26 — Berta Soler, the spokesperson for the group known as the “Ladies in White,” told the Associated Press on Sunday that the activists hope to attend the Mass that Benedict XVI will officiate on Wednesday at Revolution Square in Havana.
Soler said that “despite official repression” they intended to show up dressed in white but without the traditional T-shirts that bear the name of the group’s leader who died last year.
The activist said they were not seeking to engage in any protest activity during the religious ceremony, therefore she has asked the other members “not to chant slogans.” At the same time, they were advised to wear comfortable shoes and to bring water bottles and hats for protection against the sun.
The members of the movement held their traditional Sunday march down Fifth Avenue on Sunday without incident while under the gaze of the international media.
