HAVANA TIMES — Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen on Wednesday criticized the granting of a visa to visit the United States to Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro, as well as to the Havana City Historian, Eusebio Leal, DPA reported.

The Cuban-American Republican asked the Obama administration to review its decision because it serves to “spread Castro propaganda,” besides being “dangerous and counterproductive to our interests in foreign policy and national security.”

Ros-Lehtinen is the current chair of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.

Mariela Castro is scheduled to participate in an academic event of the Latin American Studies Association in San Francisco from 23 to 26 May.

Meanwhile, Leal, who is already on US soil, will speak this Friday at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC. He addressed a forum at the New York Public Library on Tuesday on the restoration of Old Havana.

  • i thought that americans believed in freedom of expression and the right of people to travel where they like. this is in the helsinki accords. when president nixon asked chairman mao if he´d allow chinese free immigration chairman mao replied “how many hundred million do you want?” some of those chinese leaders should have been in comedy! someone asked chou en lai what he thought of the french revolution and he replied “it´s too soon to tell.”

  • Eusebio Leal I support your effort in regards to Old Havana, I simply have no time to fly to NY on Tuesday, Ros-Lethinen is in the diveded Miami Cubean Society on the losing side, and as soon as Obama is reelected you will see some changes. I Propose to your Country to Ratify MLC_2006 (Maritime Labor convention) with Nicaragua, Venezuela and Colombia, we need only four additional Nations (30 are required we have at present 26 and it will be International Laws under the Umbrella of the UN), and blows the Embargo away for sure, you can reach me under [email protected] or [email protected]
