HAVANA TIMES, May 2 — Pinar del Rio is the new champ of Cuban baseball after defeating Ciego de Avila 6-1 to win the final series of the 2010-2011 season four games to two.

Yosvani Torres worked his way out of a bases loaded no-out jam in the second inning and later a tight spot in the fourth, before settling down to finish off Ciego de Avila with a complete game.

The win was Torres sixth in the playoffs against three loses.  He scattered eight hits and had an equal number of strikeouts. It didn’t take long for him to be named the final series Most Valuable Player.

The Pinar del Rio offense came alive for three runs in the second inning, added another in the fourth and two more in the eighth.

Leadoff hitter David Alejandro went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs.  William Saavedra drove in two more runs for Pinar on sacrifice flies with runners on third.  Ciego’s only run was driven in by Yorelvis Charles.

Pinar out hit Ciego 10-8 and played flawless defensively while Ciego – with the best defense in the league during the regular season – committed a costly error by Lisdey Diaz in the third.
